My broker, Van, pushes me to think – makes my brain hurt sometimes! He asked me a thought-provoking question last week, “Pam, looking over your first full year in real estate – what would you say is your ‘take away’?” I’ve learned so much …. but I was thinking of the details, not the Big Picture. What was the Big Take Away? What did I discover about the business and how I relate to it?
Steve Forbes said, “You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.” What does that have to do with real estate? Lots!
When I took my first real estate course, I remember the instructor telling the class, “This class is to teach you how to pass the real estate exam, NOT how to be a real estate agent.” Until I became an active, licensed real estate agent with real clients and real transactions, I had no idea what he was talking about. I didn’t know what I didn’t know. NOW I know some of what I didn’t know. The dots are starting to connect.
What was my Big Take Away? As I pondered the question, what came to mind first was all the knowledge I had gained – mostly technical stuff - all the essentials for serving buyers and/or serving sellers. But I’ve learned much more than how to search for homes, pull a warranty deed, write an offer, or do a thorough Market Analysis. I’ve learned how to be a better representative for my client – how to integrate all the technical aspects of the job with the soft skills of relating to my clients. I’m learning how to look at the big picture and how to move forward in a transaction; not only the “what” to do but “why” I’m doing it. Rather than compartmentalizing the skills, I am learning how to blend them together.
Another “take away” has been that if I want to succeed in this business, I need to watch and listen to people who have succeeded before me. Do what they do. Be a person of integrity. Learn from my mistakes. I am thankful for my brokers, Van and Jeanne, for not just teaching me “how to do real estate” but for guiding and coaching me, being great examples, and allowing me to learn through my own experiences instead of giving me easy answers (even if that would save them time in the short term).
